The ancient Egyptians were a civilization that continues to fascinate us, even in modern times. Cairo, the current capital of Egypt, was the heart of this civilization, even way back then. Founded in 969 C.E., it has evolved into a religious and cultural focal point of Africa and the Middle East. Cairo also happens to be the largest city in Egypt. If you are interested in ancient Egypt and how it is still reflected today, plan a trip to Cairo. The first step towards this vacation is to get your US passport.
Passports
Getting a passport used to be a hassle until online passport services came along. No matter what you need done – a name change, a pasport renewal, a replacement – it can all be done online. The best part is that it can all be done from your home computer – no more waiting in lines or waiting for weeks upon weeks for your passport to arrive. Because these services are expedited, you can get a passport in time for any trip, no matter the deadline.
World Heritage Sites
Cairo has two World Heritage Sites, each quite notable. The first is Coptic Cairo, the site that was once known as Babylon. This is a hugely important (and interesting) spot for religious, cultural, and historical reasons. Five of the original churches still stand, as well as the first mosque ever built in Egypt and the first synagogue.
Holy Sites
The other World Heritage Site in Cairo is known as Islamic Cairo. This is known as the medieval heart of the city of Cairo. This site offers some of the most grandiose and beautiful religious monuments the Egyptian culture has to offer. Some of these monuments include the Al-Hakim Mosque, the Qalawun complex, the Midan Hussein and Sayyidna al-Hussein Mosque. These are some of the most sacred sites in all of Egypt.
Pyramids
The Saqqara Pyramids site is a spot you cannot miss. The complex contains a village and the vast ancient necropolis where many important ancient Egyptian figures were buried. Important structures include the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the Pyramid of Teti I, the Tomb of Ankhmahor, and much more. Cairo is tied so closely to its history, and visiting this site really puts time into perspective.
Sites
Dahshur is another ancient site that features large pyramids. These pyramids include the famous Bent Pyramid, the Red Pyramid of Sneferu, which is believed to be Egypt’s oldest“true”pyramid” and the Black Pyramid.. These pyramids are often compared to the pyramids of Giza, most prefer the pyramids at Dahshur though as they are not as laden with tourists as those at Giza.
Antiquity
The museums in Cairo are home to some of the World’s most amazing artifacts and exhibits. The most famous is the Egyptian Antiquities Museum. This museum was built in 1902 and exhibits over 120,000 pieces of ancient Egyptian artifacts. This museum also has specialized sections that offer information about Tutankhamen, old world monuments, and sarcophagi.
